The Department of Botany started functioning in 1964 with pre-degree classes. It became a full fledged department in 1980.  Prof. Thomas Jacob served as the first HoD. It has presently 4 permanent faculty members. Students of the department won first rank of the University of Kerala  for graduation in 1976 and 1977 respectively.
